Gay Marriage: The Center has opposed same-sex marriage in the country saying it is not comparable with the Indian family unit concept of husband, wife and children.

The Center on Sunday filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court opposing legal recognition of same-sex marriages.

The Center told the apex court that same-sex relationships and heterosexual relationships are clearly distinct categories which cannot be treated equally.

The government apprised the Supreme Court that same-sex persons living together as partners, which has now been decriminalised, is not comparable with the Indian family unit concept of husband, wife and children.

“Such relations are clearly distinct classes which cannot be treated as equal,” the government said.
