Central Railway Mumbai Division fined 100 crores from those traveling without ticket

Mumbai:

The number of passengers traveling without ticket in Mumbai’s train is creating a new record every year. Railways also impose heavy fines on such passengers. Meanwhile, the Central Railway has made people caught traveling without tickets eligible from April 2022 to February 2023. Railways collect Rs 100 crore from these passengers as fine in Mumbai division. This is a record for any division of the Ministry of Railways.

According to the data released by the Central Railway, a total of 18.08 lakh passengers were caught traveling without tickets in local and express trains between April 2022 and February 2023. Central Railway collected Rs 100.31 crore as fine from these passengers. According to railway data, the number of passengers traveling without tickets in the financial year 2022-23 has seen more than 12 per cent accounts.

Railway fined Rs 39 crore more this year
This year, the Railways has imposed an excess fine of Rs 39 crore. The number of ticketless passengers is about 6 lakh more in this financial year than last financial year, which includes that all the appeals and intensive checking campaign of railways are not showing much effect. According to statistics, 25,000 passengers have been caught traveling without tickets in AC local trains as well, due to which the Railways has imposed a fine of 5.05 crores.

77 railway stations in Mumbai division
Mumbai division has 77 railway stations and 1200 traveling ticket examiners (TTEs) who are constantly on the lookout for ticketless passengers. TT Preeti Singh told NDTV, “The body language of the passenger often gives us a statement that there is some vulnerability. Our experience of seeing so many passengers every day also helps in nabbing the culprits. He further said, “Registration is not easy without the ticket passenger agreeing to furnish the bond. They create many pedagogies, when they don’t realize their mistake, we prosecute them under that respective suit.”

What is PRO?
Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, Shivaji Sutar said that this fine is collected from ticketless passengers after continuous intensive checking campaign. Along with this, he says, ‘We do not want to create any record, but passengers always appeal that they travel with valid tickets only.’
