The southwest monsoon season starts from 1 June and continues till 30 September. India received 878.5 mm of rainfall between June 1 and September 20, which was 7 per cent more than the normal rainfall of 822 mm for the period under review. In Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, deficient rains have affected paddy sowing in the states. The area under paddy sown during Kharif season till September 16 was 18.90 lakh hectare less than the previous year.
