Chandrayaan-3 LIVE: Revival of Vikram, Pragyan automatic, says ISRO scientist

Chandrayaan-3 LIVE Updates: All eyes on Chandrayaan-3 as efforts to establish contact with the Chandrayaan-3’s lander Vikram and the Pragyan rover are underway. Yesterday, ISRO shared an update saying that it made efforts to establish communication with the Vikram lander and Pragyan rover to ascertain their wake-up condition, but as of now, no signals have been received from them. However, the space agency added that it would continue efforts to establish contact.

After a 40-day journey into space, the Chandrayaan-3 lander, ‘Vikram’, touched down on August 23 at the uncharted lunar South Pole making India the first country to do so. After transversing over 100 meters on the lunar surface from the Shiv Shakti Point, the touchdown spot of the lander Vikram on the lunar surface, the rover Pragyan was safely parked and set into sleep mode on September 2

Chandrayaan-3 LIVE Updates: Revival of Vikram, Pragyan automatic, says ISRO scientist

As Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) preps to revive Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram lander and rover from ‘sleep mode’ after almost two weeks, Nilesh M Desai, Director, Space Applications Centre (SAC) on Friday said that the ‘revival’ of the lander and the rover is “automatic” and cannot be nudged from the Earth.

The Director of the Space Applications Centre, one of the major centres of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), said that signals will come as soon as the solar-powered lander and rover are charged because of the sunrise, which happened in the lunar surface on September 22.

However, Desai said that till now no signals have come and that the efforts to establish contact with the Chandrayaan-3’s lander Vikram and the rover Pragyan are underway.

“As it is clear in ISRO’s tweet, efforts are on to establish contact with the Lander and the Rover. It will automatically revive and send signals. Till now, no signals have come,” the ISRO scientist told ANI.

Both the lander and the rover were put into sleep mode earlier this month on September 4 and 2 respectively, ahead of the lunar night setting in on Earth’s only natural satellite. Desai said that on September 22, dawn broke on the moon and people would be informed once signals were recieved.

Observing a 50-50 per cent chance of the revival, the scientist further said that if the electronics survive the cold temperature we will recieve signals. “Otherwise, the mission has already done its job,” he added.

The scientist added that if the lander and rover are revived, experiments on the moon’s surface will continue.

Meanwhile, Padma Shri awardee and former ISRO scientist, Mylswamy Annadurai said, “…I am pretty hopeful about Pragyan because it has been tested…But, with respect to Lander, we will have to wait and see…” on ISRO’s attempt to revive Vikram Lander and Pragyan Rover of Chandrayaan-3. (ANI)

Chandrayaan-3 LIVE Updates: What’s next if the lander and rover wake up?

If ISRO is able to revive the lander and the rover, the information that is derived from experiments that could once again be conducted by the Chandrayaan-3 payloads would be a “bonus”. Former ISRO scientist Tapan Mishra said that confirming the presence of water would be the next important thing. Read more here

Chandrayaan-3 LIVE Updates: What if Vikram Lander and Pragyan rover are not revived?

After putting the rover into sleep mode, ISRO had said, “The rover completed its assignments. It is now safely parked and set into sleep mode. APXS and LIBS payloads are turned off… Currently, the battery is fully charged. The solar panel is oriented to receive the light at the next sunrise expected on September 22, 2023.” “The receiver is kept on. Hoping for a successful awakening for another set of assignments! Else, it will forever stay there as India’s lunar ambassador,” the country’s space agency had said in a post on X.

Chandrayaan-3 LIVE Updates: Why was Chandrayaan-3 put to sleep?

After conducting experiments on the moon from August 23 to September 4, the rover and lander modules of Chandrayaan-3 were put to sleep in a bid to survive the extremely frigid atmosphere at the south pole of the moon.

Chandrayaan-3 LIVE Updates: How far has Pragyan rover travelled since touchdown?

The Vikram lander aboard Chandrayaan-3 lander touched down at the uncharted lunar South Pole on August 23 after a 40-day journey through space. The Pragyan Rover was safely parked and set into sleep mode on September 2 after transversing over 100 meters on the lunar surface from the Shiv Shakti Point.

“We had a plan to move the rover to almost 300-350 metres. But due to some reasons…the rover has moved 105 metres there,” officials said on Friday.

‘Very difficult for few electronic components to work in such huge range temperature’ Space scientist Suvendu Patnayak

Space scientist Suvendu Patnayak explained “The Chandrayaan-3 landed successfully and it worked for almost 14 days. It was designed to work for 14 days (on the moon). Its life period was only 14 days because the moon’s temperature falls down to (-) 250 degrees during the (lunar) nighttime. So it worked during the sun hours or daytime and during that, it had already given all the data (it was supposed to).”

Patnayak recently superannuated as the deputy director of Pathani Samanta Planetarium in Bhubaneswar.

“It is very difficult for few electronic components to work in such a huge range of temperature. So it was expected it would not work after 14 days…But a few scientists are very hopeful that it may work again. So if it works again, it will be a boon for us and we will perform the same experiments again and again,” Patnayak added

‘Indian govt should cooperate in investigation,’ says US

Fresh tension has flared between India and Canada early this week following Canadian Prime Minster Justin Trudeau’s explosive allegations of the “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia on June 18. India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020.

Chandrayaan-3 LIVE Updates: How will Chandrayaan-3 be ‘woken up’?

“Vikram Lander and Pragyan Rover have been in deep sleep for almost two weeks now. It is almost like taking out something from the freezer and then trying to use it. The temperatures would have gone beyond -150 degrees Celsius,” ISRO Chairman Madhavan Nair told ANI.

“The solar heat will warm up the instruments and also recharge the batteries. If both these conditions are successfully met, there is a fairly good chance that the system will be operational again.”

Chandrayaan-3 LIVE Updates: If Vikram lander, Pragyan rover wake up; What’s next major mission for Chandrayaan-3?

Former ISRO scientist Tapan Mishra said that confirming the presence of water is the next important thing.

“There was a lesser induced spectroscopy instrument. It has shown us all the expected metals there. It has also shown us the presence of oxygen there, but we are looking for water. The oxygen can come from the breaking of any other silicon material which is actually the basis of all the rocks anywhere in the universe, also it can come from the breaking up of water. But if we could detect hydrogen there, detecting the presence of hydrogen would conclusively prove that there is water because hydrogen is never part of any other compound. So in that case we will be able to conclusively prove that there is water there. We have remote sensing-wise shown the presence of water. Now physically also we will able to show,” he added.
