Ferrari continued its resurgence as Charles Leclerc entered F1’s return to Australia after a 2-year hiatus in pole position by nearly 3 tenths from Max Verstappen’s Red Bull. The renovated Albert Park circuit paid home a fascinating qualifying session that saw Red Bull’s Sergio Perez come into P3. The biggest losers of the season were Spain. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr., who couldn’t put together a good lap on the final run after his first run in Q3, was hindered by a red flag to crash by Fernando Alonso, who set for a surprise pole in the Alpine had gone. Sainz only managed P9, while Alonso made the top 10.

Lando Norris managed P4 for McLaren as the Woking-based team showed signs of momentum. 7-time world champion Lewis Hamilton managed the P5 followed by his teammate George Russell in the P6. Daniel Ricciardo managed P7 for McLaren in his home race, while Esteban Ocon was leading alpine in P8.

The qualifying session was mostly dominated by Leclercka’s Ferrari.

Gasly managed P11 ahead of Tsunoda in P13 for AlphaTauri. The two were split for Alfa Romeo in P12 by Valtteri Bottas, with teammate Guanyue Zhou managing P14. Mick Schumacher qualified like Kevin Magnussen for Haas as they came P15 and P17 respectively. Alex Albon was the leading Williams in P16, while Latifi crashed during the session as he attempted to overtake Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin for better track position.

Sebastian Vettel was the last car to qualify in P18 for Aston Martin, which was only red flagged by the Latifi-Stroh crash as his team did not manage to fix his car after their practice 3 crash.
