Charlotte firefighters rescue family dog trapped in rock mine for days – Henry’s Club

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Charlotte firefighters helped a dog reunite with his family, saving him from being trapped in a rock mine for days.

The K9, named Zeus, was trapped 170 feet below the Vulcan Pineville mine in South Charlotte. On Monday, employees saw him and called 911.

“It happened on Monday, but the dog could have been through the weekend,” said Charlotte FD captain Jackie Gilmore.

The firefighters were unable to go down into the mine due to an unstable leg and decided to descend by a crane to help save Zeus.

Firefighter EJ McCormick said, “As luck would have it, today was the day we were working so we went out there and did it.”

Zeus was excited to see the firefighters but things became difficult when a tree branch broke off and scared him.

“It involved a little hike for us but we were able to convince him with a little bit of food,” McCormick said.

But Zeus did not like to eat. This was the burger he cooked earlier in the day.

“The dog spit it out so the cook that day had a bad review,” Gilmore says.

Zeus wanted to take him to the crane and they took him and saved him. He was introduced to his owner.

“It is something we trained for. It was great to put that training to use today.”
