Chinese tech giant Baidu plans to launch the service as a standalone application and gradually merge it into its search engine.
Chinese Internet search major Baidu is reportedly planning to launch an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot service similar to Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT in March. From drafting a poem to writing basic software code to provide information about the questions asked, ChatGPT is designed to provide human-like answers to questions.
Now a Reuters report has revealed that the Chinese tech giant Baidu is planning to launch the service as a standalone application and will gradually merge it into its search engine. Baidu said it plans to include chatbot-generated results when users make search requests, rather than just links.
Chatbots in China currently focus on social interaction while ChatGPT fares better in more professional tasks such as programming and essay writing. ChatGPT’s technology works by learning from large amounts of data how to respond to prompts by users in a human-like way, offering information like a search engine or even prose like an aspiring novelist.
Recently, a report by IANS also claimed that the searches for ChatGPT on Google have reached a record high and China is at the forefront of this demand. According to data obtained by Finbold, global Google searches for the term ‘chatGPT’ have reached a popularity score of 92.
The report noted, “The score reached 100 for the week ending January 11. Notably, the term registered a score of less than 1 until November 30, 2022, when the tool was launched.”
With respect to regional fragmentation, China is on top with a peak score of 100 as of January 13, followed by Nepal at 35, while Norway is third with a score of 28. Singapore ranks fourth with a score of 27, while Israel ranks fourth. Ranked fifth in 26.
Notably, US states have failed to feature among countries registering increased demand for ChatGPT, the report pointed out. The high demand in China can be attributed to various factors such as users opting to avail Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).
