Chess Prodigy R Praggnanandhaa Shares “Checkmate Moment” From English Exam

Chess player R Praggnanandhaa, one of the country’s youngest grandmasters, got an unfair advantage over other students while appearing for the Class 12 English language exam. He shared a photo of the paper, which had a question from the 44th Chess Olympiad held in India last year. The 17-year-old was overjoyed to see the question as he was one of the winners of the Olympiad.

In the question students were asked to describe how the 44th Chess Olympiad was organized in Mamallapuram, Chennai, in a letter to a friend studying abroad. “I gave my 12th exam today, English paper…and glad to see this question pop up!” He tweeted along with the picture of the question paper.

Since being shared, the post has collected over half a million views and 80,000 likes.

The 17-year-old beat world champion Magnus Carlsen three times in just six months in 2022. Most recently, he played his best match at the Meltwater Chess Champions Tour Finals, defeating Polish GM Jan-Krzysztof Duda. He said that his ultimate goal is to become number one in the world in the sport.

“Yes, my ultimate dream and goal is to become number one in the world and world chess champion and I think it can be achieved in the next three to four years,” he said.
