Chhapra spurious liquor tragedy: BJP MP Sushil Modi on Sunday hit out at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over his statement that no compensation was given to the victims of Chhapra spurious liquor tragedy. “In 2018, according to media reports, CM Nitish Kumar said that compensation would be given if alcohol was proved to be the cause of death. He had promised Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of the poisoning victims. Was given compensation Sushil Modi asked why not in Saran tragedy?

He further said, “As per the Excise and Provisions Act, Nitish Kumar will have to pay compensation to the families of the Saran liquor tragedy victims and the BJP will go to any extent for these people.”

Reacting to the deaths in the Chhapra spurious liquor tragedy, CM Nitish Kumar had earlier said, “Daru pke mar jayega usko muwaja denge… Sawaal hi nahi paya hota hai (No compensation given to people who died after drinking Will go… We have been appealing – If we drink, we will die… No good will come of those who talk in favor of drinking…”)

The CM had further said that the number of deaths due to alcohol is much higher in other states, especially in BJP-ruled states. He said, “Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, UP are on the top… where are they not. Look at the accounts of all places.”

The death toll in Chhapra spurious liquor incident has crossed 70 at present.
