Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin reviews progress of storm water drainage project in Chennai

Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday directed line agencies like Greater Chennai Corporation, Water Resources Department and Highways Department to expedite work on preparedness for monsoon in the metropolitan area. He reviewed the progress of work on drains of drains in different parts of the city.

The Chennai Corporation has taken up storm water drainage projects at an estimated cost of Rs 900 crore in various flood-prone areas of the city. Some of the localities include T Nagar, Pulianthope, Kodambakkam, Ashok Nagar, Adyar, Indira Nagar, Velachery, Egmore and Vepery. The total project cost of long-term and short-term projects in 15 areas of the city is ₹4,070 crore.

The Highways Department is all set to complete the work on development of culverts to prevent flooding in low-lying areas near main roads. The Water Resources Department has also taken up projects for flood mitigation in various areas.

After digging up roads to lay rain water drains, the chief minister ordered officials to complete the work without any difficulty to residents and motorists.

Mr Stalin has ordered the completion of short-term projects before the onset of the northeast monsoon by the end of October.

Under the first phase of Singara Chennai 2.0, 70 stretches have been dug for storm water drainage. Another 23 parts have been excavated under the second phase of the project.

A total of 165 blocks have been dug for flood relief in areas where residents had complained of floods during the last monsoon.

The World Bank has also funded the development of the drains with 111 parts, the German Development Bank KfW has funded six parts and the ADB has funded 162 parts. Most of the short-term projects will be completed before the northeast monsoon. Long term projects for flood mitigation will be completed in three years.
