China looking to Ukraine war to develop “hybrid warfare”: Taiwan security chief

China considers the democratically governed island Taiwan as its territory.

Taipei:

A senior Taiwanese security official said on Wednesday that China is looking at the war experience in Ukraine to develop a “hybrid war” strategy against Taiwan, including drones and psychological pressure.

Taiwan is carefully studying the lessons of the Ukraine war to inform that China, which views the democratically governed island as its own territory, needs to use force to enforce its claim to sovereignty. How to react to threats

China conducted military drills around Taiwan in August to express its anger over a visit to Taipei by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and has since maintained its military activities, albeit at a slower pace.

Speaking in parliament, Taiwan’s National Security Bureau director general Chen Ming-tong said China was also paying attention to what was happening in Ukraine.

“This year, the communist army has borrowed from the experience of the Russo-Ukraine war to develop a ‘hybrid war’ against Taiwan and strengthen its combat training and preparedness against stronger enemies,” he told lawmakers.

Following China’s August exercises, it expanded its “gray zone” and hybrid activities against Taiwan, particularly with the use of drones that land near Taiwan-controlled islands off the coast of China and Taiwan’s air defense detection zones. I have both flown in, Chen said.

Taiwan maintains that China’s “grey-zone” warfare campaign includes erratic tactics to eliminate the enemy without resorting to open combat, such as repeated flights over Taiwan’s air defenses and to fire Taiwan’s air force. to force a scuffle.

China has released images of Taiwan’s military online to “defame” and attack the government, he said, referring to a video circulated on Chinese social media in August of Taiwanese soldiers on offshore islands by drone.

Chen said these activities “highlight that the Chinese communists have increased their cognitive warfare, gray zone activities and other hybrid methods, posing a new form of threat to national security.”

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. China has blamed Taiwan for escalating tensions and said it was “colluding” with foreign forces against Beijing to promote the island’s formal independence.

Chen said China’s military threats to Taiwan drew support from the United States and its allies to ensure that what happened to Ukraine would not be repeated in the Taiwan Straits.

He said this would enhance Taiwan’s ability to deal with China and prevent “their plot to attack Taiwan”.

Russia calls its invasion of Ukraine a “special military operation”.
