China reported nearly 220,000 new weekly Covid cases till January 1: WHO

The WHO said it has not received any data from China on new COVID-19 hospitalizations.

China reported 218,019 new weekly COVID-19 cases as of January 1, the World Health Organization said in its weekly report, as the country grapples with a surge in virus cases.

China reported five new deaths related to COVID-19 on Tuesday, bringing the official death toll to 5,258, which is very low by global standards.

In December last year, the WHO said it had received no data on new COVID-19 hospitalizations from China as Beijing scrapped its zero-COVID policy, leading some health experts to question whether Can it hide information about its outbreak?

However, the WHO has said that gaps in the data may be due to Chinese officials simply struggling to count cases.
