Form of words:

Mumbai: Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh on Thursday said that China is exporting a lot of military hardware such as ships and submarines to Pakistan and this will affect the security dynamics in the region.

The Indian Navy will have to be prepared for this development, he said, adding that India is closely watching the naval cooperation between Pakistan and China.

A lot of hardware like ships and submarines from China is being exported to Pakistan. This will greatly affect the security dynamics here. We have to be prepared for it, said Admiral Singh.

He was responding to a question about China giving Pakistan its largest and most advanced warship after the commissioning of the Scorpene-class submarine INS Vela earlier this month.

Designed and built by China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC), the frigate was delivered to the Pakistan Navy at a commissioning ceremony in Shanghai. The Type 054A/P frigate was designated PNS Tugril.

China is also a very important defense partner for Pakistan, providing it with vital military hardware and other equipment.

Often referred to as Pakistan’s all-time ally, China has been increasing its presence in the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean in recent years. Navy sources said no operations have been conducted by the Chinese Navy or research ships in India’s Exclusive Economic Zone since the start of the coronavirus pandemic last year.

Responding to another question on the activities of the Chinese Navy in the Indian Ocean region, Admiral Singh said it was working in the Gulf of Aden in 2008 for anti-piracy patrols. We have had their submarines (in the IOR) coming at regular intervals in the past. As of now, most of the Chinese activities are centered around their research vessel, their intelligence gathering and their survey ships. The Navy Chief said that we are monitoring it very carefully.

He said the P8i Maritime Reconnaissance Anti-Submarine Patrol Aircraft has been a real force multiplier for India along with the Sea Guardian drones leased from the US.

He added that P8is and Sea Guardian are keeping a very close watch because of their reach in the Indian Ocean region and their ability to stay in one area for long periods of time.
