Notably, a dispute between a man identified by his surname Gu and his neighbor Zhong had been going on since April 2022 when the latter cut down Gu’s trees without permission.

According to China Daily, Mr. Gu breaks into his neighbor Zhong’s chicken farm and then uses a flashlight to scare the birds, causing them to kill each other. The light from the torch frightened his chickens, as a result of which they ran into a corner and were crushed to death.

That day 460 chickens were killed and Mr. Gu was caught by the police. He was then ordered to pay Zhong 3,000 yuan (Rs 35,734), further intensifying his resentment towards Zhong. He was undeterred and continued to seek revenge. So, he went to the property a second time and killed 640 chickens in the same way.

Chinese authorities estimate that the cost of the 1,100 dead chickens was around 13,840 yuan (Rs 1,64,855).

A court in Hengyang County in central China’s Hunan province ruled Tuesday that Gu intentionally caused property damage to Zhong, according to China Daily.

The court sentenced him to six months in jail with one year’s probation. Mr. Gu was punished because he showed remorse for his crimes.
