Chopper crash: IAF recovers flight data recorder, last minute cockpit talks

The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Thursday recovered vital equipment from the Mi-17V5 helicopter that crashed in Tamil Nadu, which killed the Chief of Defense Staff, General Bipin Rawat and 12 others on December 8. As per reports, the defense officials have retrieved the flight data recorder (blackbox) and cockpit voice recorder from the crash site.

The two boxes recovered from the spot are likely to be taken to Delhi or Bengaluru to ascertain the cause Accident, The black box will provide important data on the chain of events leading up to the tragedy on the hills.

Rawat was on his way to the Defense Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington to address faculty and student officers of the Staff Course when the fatal accident took place in the Katteri-Nunchappanachatram area.

Meanwhile, Indian Air Force Group Captain Varun Singh, who survived the helicopter crash, has been shifted from the Army Hospital in Wellington, Tamil Nadu to Bengaluru. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh told Parliament on Thursday that a tri-services inquiry led by Air Marshal Manvendra Singh has started investigating the helicopter crash. The minister said in the Lok Sabha that every effort is being made to save Group Captain Varun Singh.
