Choti Holi or Holika Dahan is celebrated a day before the main Holi festival. This year it is being celebrated on 7 March 2023. This festival is celebrated with great fanfare not only in India but also abroad as it marks the beginning of the spring season. People bid goodbye to the harsh winter and celebrate the victory of good over evil. On Holika Dahan, people gather around a bonfire with their friends and relatives and sing and dance various songs and rhymes while circumambulating Holika Dahan.
According to Hindus, the demonic Holika was burnt to ashes on the day of Holika Dahan. Holika, the sister of the demon king Hiranyakashipu, tried to burn Prahlad, a devotee of Lord Vishnu, to death. Prahlad prayed to God and he was saved from Holika.
