City to conduct first survey of urban nesting habits of birds Vadodara News – Times of India

Vadodara: In order to scientifically understand the habitat of bird species in urban areas, online survey of birds’ nests will be conducted for the first time in Vadodara.
City based environmental organization – Kids for Environmental Development Initiative (KD), MS University’s Department of Zoology, Gujarat Ecology Society and Community Science Center (CSC) have joined hands to conduct the survey with the help of citizens, especially school children.
The institutes will circulate an online form, which will be widely publicized through social media platforms and workshops for school children.
“The forms will contain a list of common birds with their scientific names and photographs which will provide easy access to identify the nesting species. The form will also list some observation points such as the type of nesting sites – on the ground, in bushes, trees, buildings or any other site, if the nest is built in natural habitat or artificial habitat such as a nest box, position of the nest such as that it was under construction or the parents were incubating the eggs or even nurturing the young. And finally, in which area of the city the nest was seen, ”said hitarth pandyaWhich runs KDI.
During the Covid-19 induced lockdown in 2020, KEDI had conducted a similar survey through which around 20 species of nesting were reported in different parts of Vadodara city.
“Glad to see that there was maximum reporting for the house sparrow, Passer domestic. Next in the abundance of the report were purple-tailed sunbirds and tailor-birds. Common Myna and Red Vented Bulbul are also two of the most common species in the urban area and their nesting was also reported in good numbers. jungle bubbler And laughing pigeonProfessor Geeta Padate said.
