Clashes between Governor, Speaker of Bengal on legislative issues

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee on Monday said they will pass a bill that is awaiting the prior assent.

The assembly recently passed the Howrah Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which aims to bifurcate the Howrah Municipal Corporation by dividing the civic wards into Howrah and Bally townships. The Governor has sought some clarifications on the Bill.

Mr. Banerjee questioned the delay in the Bill. “The elections to the Howrah Municipal Corporation could not be held due to delay on the bill. There was no reason for this. If three agriculture bills can be passed and then withdrawn overnight, then I do not see any reason for delay,” he said. Emphasizing on the urgency of the bill, he said that the governor should only explain the reason for the delay. can.

Mr Dhankhar tweeted, “Shocked & shocked @BimanBanerjee18 Flagged on 24th Nov on @MamataOfficial issues pending consideration for lack of response on Howrah Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2021. Worrying: Speaker WBLA has not been made available for more than a year on record in other matters. ,

The Governor observed that he had sought an explanation which was not provided. The Speaker felt that the Governor had nothing to do with the Assembly and this was wrong.

The Trinamool Congress once again accused the Governor of encroaching upon its jurisdiction. It added that the Speaker was right in questioning the delay.
