climate relativity

Ranked 10, India has retained its position among the top 10 countries for the third consecutive year in the Climate Change Performance Index 2022, put together by Germanwatch, New Climate Institute and Climate Action Network. Since the top three positions were kept vacant because no country performed well enough on all index parameters to receive an overall “Very High” rating, India’s performance is actually 7th best. It was a “high” performer on all measures except the renewable-energy effort, for which it was rated “moderate”. Denmark, Sweden and Norway top the charts. They are ranked 4th, 5th and 6th, while the UK, Morocco and Chile get the other three places above India.

Given the government’s focus on renewable energy and key private investment schemes, our performance on this parameter should improve. On emissions, we don’t do too bad, but our recently set goal of going carbon neutral by 2070 should hopefully prompt action. There is also room for profit, in the other two respects, on energy use and climate policy. Of the two big emitters, China dropped four places to 37th, while the US jumped six places to 55th. We have done well, but in a world that does poorly.
