CM Stalin urges Tamil Nadu Governor to immediately send NEET Bill for President’s assent

In September, the TN Assembly passed a bill to provide admission to undergraduate medical courses in the state on the basis of marks obtained through ‘normalization methods’ in class XII, as was done before 2017.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday met Governor RN Ravi at the Raj Bhavan and urged him to send Bill passed by Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Demand for exemption from NEET for admission to medical courses to the President of India for his immediate consent.

In September this year, the assembly passed the Tamil Nadu Admission Undergraduate Medical Degree Courses Bill, 2021 to provide admissions to undergraduate medical courses in the state on the basis of marks obtained in class XII before 2017 through ‘normalization methods’.

The Bill was introduced in the Assembly after a high-level committee headed by Justice AK Rajan, a retired High Court judge, observed that NEET had diversified into MBBS and higher medical studies mainly in favor of the affluent sections of the society. Social representation has been ‘obviously reduced’, and that if the ordeal continues for a few more years, Tamil Nadu’s health system will be badly hit.

During the previous AIADMK regime, two laws of similar nature passed by the Assembly did not get the assent of the President.

State Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan, Health Minister Mr. Subramaniam, Health Secretary J. Radhakrishnan, Principal Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office T. Udayachandran and Officer on Special Duty in the Health Department P. Senthil Kumar accompanied the Chief Minister on Saturday.
