CNG now costlier than petrol in Lucknow: Petrol vs CNG fuel-efficiency, running cost explained – Times of India

CNG has always been considered a cheaper alternative to cars as compared to conventional fuels like petrol or diesel. However, like the prices of petrol and diesel, the price of CNG is also skyrocketing in some cities across the country. A prime example is the city of Lucknow, where after the latest price hike (Rs 2), CNG is priced at Rs 97 per kg!

While both CNG and petrol have different metrics as far as a unit is concerned, the former is technically more expensive than the latter. So is there any point in opting for a CNG car over a petrol car, if saving fuel cost is your only concern?

Let us take the example of Maruti Suzuki DZire, which is available with both petrol and CNG options, runs an average of 1,500 km per month. The average fuel efficiency of the Petrol-MT Swift DZire is 22.41 kmpl. In contrast, the DZire CNG is claimed to deliver a mileage of 31.12 km/kg. To run 1,500 km, the petrol-powered Dzire would require around 66.9 liters of fuel, while the Dzire CNG would require around 48.2 kg of CNG.
If you take the fuel cost into account, every month traveling with Petrol DZire will cost you around Rs 6,461 if the sedan is to give the same mileage as claimed, while the DZire CNG is to run the same distance. 4,675 will be spent every month. This means that, in this particular situation, there is still a difference of Rs 1,786 that could potentially save on fuel costs if you switch to a CNG car.
