Coal India records record production of 622.6 million tonnes in FY 2012

New Delhi: State-run Coal India Limited produced 622.6 million tonnes of coal, the highest ever annual production.

Its previous record high production was recorded in FY 2019 when it produced 607 million tonnes of the mineral. After shrinking in the last two years, Coal India made a strong comeback with production addition of 26.4 million in FY22, a company statement said.

In FY21, the company produced 596.2 million tonnes of coal.

In the just-concluded FY23, Coal India also achieved record high numbers in terms of off-take to power plants and coal dispatch.

Amid rising coal demand from the country’s generating companies, Coal India’s supply to the power sector jumped to a record 540.4 million tonnes in the previous fiscal from 44.5 million tonnes in FY11.

The total offtake from the PSUs increased by 15.3% year-on-year to around 662 million tonnes.

With a focus on boosting production, CIL has sanctioned 16 coal mining projects, of which seven are greenfield and nine are expansion projects, the statement said. Combined, they have a total capacity of approximately 100 million tonnes per year and an incremental capacity of 56.7 million tonnes per year.

Out of the 15 identified Mine Developer and Operator (MDO) projects, work orders have been issued for five projects with a capacity of 96 million tonnes per annum during the financial year 22.

The coal production and offtake target for FY 2013 has been pegged at 700 million tonnes and the company is committed to achieve them while maintaining its FY12 performance.
