Coal-rich Deucha becomes the new focus of Bengal politics over land acquisition dispute

Deucha Pachami in West Bengal’s Birbhum district is one of the largest coal blocks in the country and a major mining project is expected to come up here. Spread over an area of 12.31 sq km, it has now become the new center of militant politics in the state.

Here the tribal sections are protesting as they are not ready to give their land. The state government says that the officials will not remove anyone forcibly and the whole process will be done by consensus.

Opponents say some 20,000 people from 4,300 homes could be displaced.

According to sources, there may be presence of some Left and radical Left elements in the area.

The Bharatiya Janata Party sees this situation as an opportunity to take on the ruling Trinamool Congress, and therefore held a major meeting in Deucha for the second time on Friday.

Observers say the party’s Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, is well aware of the Nandigram agitation led by his former mentor, West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC President Mamata Banerjee, as he was next to her at the time.

Hence Suvendu Nandigram is playing the card to raise the issue of land acquisition, which was once used by TMC to topple the Left government.

The BJP along with a section of tribals took out a march in the area on Friday. Party’s state president Sukanta Majumdar said, “Mamata is taking tribal land and we will fight.”

Another section of the tribals, however, launched a protest against the BJP. A tribal leader told News18 that he is against the takeover but not with the BJP.

Local leader and TMC minister Chandranath Sinha said, “BJP is trying to create trouble. We know they can come anywhere but now they are trying to plot.
