Coal theft scam: Abhishek Banerjee’s wife did not leave in ED’s presence

Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s wife Rijura Banerjee has expressed her inability to appear before the Enforcement Directorate in Delhi for questioning in a coal theft case. He said that she can meet the officials at her residence in Kolkata. The ED had summoned him to appear before the agency in Delhi on September 1.

“I am a mother of two and it would be difficult for me to travel to New Delhi physically alone amid the pandemic” [life] And the lives of my children are at grave risk,” she said in a letter to the central agency on August 31.

“It would be convenient for me if you consider asking me to be present at my residence in Kolkata as your organization has its office in Kolkata and I also live in Kolkata. Further, to the best of my understanding, the subject matter of your investigation, the alleged cause of action also originates from West Bengal,” the letter said.

Earlier, the CBI had questioned him at his Kolkata residence. The ED has also issued summons to Abhishek Banerjee and three serving IPS officers.

In another development, a special court in Kolkata ordered that West Bengal ministers Subrata Mukherjee and Firhad Hakim be issued summons under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in the Narada sting case. The orders were issued by the ED taking cognizance of the charge sheet. Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra, former Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee and suspended IPS officer SMH Mirza are also to be summoned.
