Coimbatore City Police tightens security ahead of Republic Day

Ahead of the 74th Republic Day celebrations on Thursday, the Coimbatore City Police has beefed up security at public places and enabled policing in several areas of the city.

On Tuesday, city police commissioner V. Balakrishnan and Railway Protection Force (RPF) assistant commissioner Pramod Nair inspected the Coimbatore railway junction to check security preparedness.

Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police have deployed dog squads round the clock for checking on platforms and inside trains. Passengers and their luggage are thoroughly checked before being allowed to go to the railway station. The city police have taken control of VOC Park, where Republic Day celebrations will be held on Thursday.

Mr Balakrishnan said the city police have beefed up security at public places where huge crowds gather such as bus stands, railway stations, airports and places of worship. Along with this, the police have been instructed to do regular patrolling in the entire city.

He said that more than 1,500 policemen were deployed for security purposes, and the police were collecting information about those who were staying at the lodge. He said that all the 11 check posts at the city borders and temporary check posts within the city have been activated.
