Coimbatore: Vehicular movement affected singanallur -Vellore Road after the river noyyal Strong water flow was observed on Thursday morning.
The city police completely blocked the road. Coimbatore city police commissioner V Balakrishnan inspected the section.
Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner M Pratap said the municipal corporation is planning to set up a temporary steel bridge in the same section soon. Light motor vehicles and motorcycles will be allowed on the steel bridge.
K Deepa, a non-teaching employee of a private college, has been using the Vellore-Singanallur section for more than five years. “I am traveling from Vellore to Nava India and crossing every day in the morning and evening. Due to the heavy water current in the Noyyal river, I was forced to travel more than eight km to reach my home. The officials should expedite the construction work of the bridge. This will help thousands of motorists,” said Deepa.

“We have to dig four big pits for the construction of the four pillars for the construction of the bridge. There were drinking water pipelines crossing the area and we have shifted the pipelines to the other side and we have built a diversion road across the river. Thousands of people were using the diversion road. Due to heavy rains in the catchment area, the Noyyal river has seen heavy water flow, and the diversion road was under water. So, we stopped vehicular movement on the way,” said an official of NABARD and rural roads wing.
Singanallur Police Inspector P Arun and team reached the area and advised motorists not to stretch due to heavy water flow in the river. City Police Commissioner Balakrishnan advised the police officials to take necessary steps for security.
