Coimbatore: Sulur Air Force Station plans wartime parallel taxi track. Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: The Defense Ministry plans to build a parallel taxi track Feather Sulur Air Force Station To ensure uninterrupted operation in the event of an attack on the main runway in times of war.
Parallel taxi track operation is very challenging as the aircraft has to land and take off from a track that is shorter than the main runway.
The Defense Ministry has asked the state government to give 200 acres for the construction of a parallel taxi track and 200 acres for the planned arms depot at the IAF base. The arms depot was planned earlier as there was no such facility in the Southern Air Command, which covers a vast area including the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
And, according to sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, the revenue department has identified 400 acres in the villages of Kangeyampalayam, Appanaikanpatti and Kalangal in Sulur taluk for this purpose.
A detailed proposal has been sent to the Office of the Commissionerate of Land Administration (CLA), Chennai. The cost of land acquisition will be borne by the Defense Ministry. Sources said once the state government gives administrative approval and if the defense ministry agrees to the demarcated area, a District Revenue Officer (DRO) cadre officer will be appointed by the district administration for land acquisition. “We are waiting for the defense ministry’s reply regarding the land acquisition,” said a revenue department official.
