Colleges in West Bengal went online again after the state government’s decree

Several colleges in Kolkata and other places in West Bengal are now offering online classes following the state government’s directive to extend the summer vacations or move to virtual mode due to the heat.

Similar instructions were given to schools.

According to college spokespersons who spoke to news agency PTI, teachers have been urged to visit the campus at least three days a week to clear the backlog of administrative and academic work.

For example, Siuli Sarkar, principal of Lady Brabourne College, said they have completely shifted to online classes in all subjects and will continue until the scheduled holiday starts in the third week of May. He also said that the college campus has not been closed and its staff are coming to work for academic and administrative matters.

The principal said that many college teachers are taking online classes from the classrooms, while others are doing so from home.

Additionally, she said: “Students should only come in mid-June not until the end of the holiday.”

The online education system got a boost in India as well as in other countries soon after the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world.

When the lockdown disrupted normal life, students were asked to study online as schools and colleges were forced to remain closed. Since then, teachers have been conducting online classes on several applications such as Zoom, Google Meet, etc. for a long time.

While online classes are common in other countries, this was a first for India.

Though it was difficult and initially the students as well as the teachers faced difficulties as they were not prepared for this kind of set-up, it eventually became a common practice.
