Collegium recommends two judges for promotion to the Supreme Court

Sources said the Supreme Court Collegium has sent recommendations to the government.

Two judges have been recommended for promotion to the Supreme Court – Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Gujarat High Court Judge Jamshed Burjor Pardiwala. Sources said the five-member Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana has sent recommendations to the government.

Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia joined the bar at the Allahabad High Court in 1986 and shifted to the home state of Uttarakhand when it was formed in 2000. He was first Chief Standing Counsel in the High Court of Uttarakhand and later an Additional Advocate General for the State of Uttarakhand. ,

He was elevated as a judge of the Uttarakhand High Court in November 2008 and later became the Chief Justice of the High Courts of Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.

A fourth generation legal professional, Justice Jamshed Burjor Pardiwala began practicing law in the High Court of Gujarat in 1990. He was appointed as Standing Counsel for the Gujarat High Court in 2002 and held the position till the date of his promotion. Bench on 17 February 2011.

The Supreme Court Collegium consists of Chief Justice of India G Ramana and Justices UU Lalit, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud and L Nageswara Rao.

The current strength of the Supreme Court is 32 and two berths need to be filled to reach the maximum sanctioned strength of 34. But with the retirement of Justices Vineet Sharan and Nageswara Rao, two more berths are expected to become vacant.

Four other judges, including Chief Justice Raman, are due to retire later this year.

The collegium had recommended nine names for promotion to the Supreme Court bench in September last year. All nine got immediate approval of the government.

In the same month, the collegium recommended 68 names at once for promotion as judges in 12 high courts that were facing serious trouble.
