The Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Odisha’s tribal-dominated Sundargarh district will be filled with umbrellas during the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup in January next year.

At least 20,000 supporters will be in favor of the Indian hockey team, which is riding on the success of the Tokyo Olympics and will try to do better in the 2018 edition in Bhubaneswar to not only do better in the quarter-finals but also win the showpiece event.

Work on the stadium on the outskirts of Rourkela city began in June last year and is going on round the clock as the authorities are struggling to complete it within the time limit.

Normally it takes about 18-24 months to build a stadium of this size.

But, we have designed and planned it in such a way so that we can save time in the engineering and traditional construction part,” said Swagat Singh, infrastructure consultant, sports department.

The executive agency of the 200 crore stadium is the Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation of Odisha and has entrusted the work to Larsen & Toubro.

The Rs 80 crore accommodation near the exercise pitch is being done by another contractor and the deadline is October, the official said.

The 35-acre site includes the stadium and residences inside the 120-acre campus of the Biju Patnaik University of Technology.

“It is the biggest hockey stadium in India. We are also considering it to be the world’s largest, but this has not yet been confirmed by the FIH.”

Singh exuded confidence of completing the work on time by August.

“About 50-60 per cent of the work has been completed,” he said.

The size of the workforce is around 400. Due to the scorching heat for the past few weeks, the casting work is done at night and preparation work in the morning.

By the end of this month, the complete conch shell will be done. After the skeletal structure is complete, workers will begin to finalize.

The project has several USPs, one of which is that it is a disabled-friendly stadium.

“In other stadiums, there are multiple floodlights, but we are integrating it within the building itself so that it hinders the aesthetics,” Singh said.

A structure like the Colosseum is continuous, which makes it more functional in terms of viewing.
