The lone All India Trinamool MLA from Manipur, Tongbram Robindro, will join the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of the saffron party’s national leader in Imphal. The BJP leadership in Manipur, however, refrained from making any remarks.

Robindro won the 2017 election from Thanga constituency in Bishnupur district by defeating his closest rival, former Congress MLA T Mangibabu. The AITC MLA gained public support in his constituency due to the various development works carried out under the BJP government led by Biren in the state.

On June 18, 2020, Manipur Speaker’s Tribunal had disqualified MLA Robendro under the Anti-Defection Act in response to a petition filed by BJP MLA Satyavrat in the Tribunal. He was elected MLA from Thanga constituency on a TMC in the last assembly election, later, he joined the BJP after dissolving the state unit of the party.

However, he also quit the BJP and announced his support to the Congress party two days before the election for the lone Rajya Sabha seat. The allegation against the petitioner was that he had voluntarily given up his parent political party BJP and supported the Congress.

The troubled Manipur Congress recently suffered a major setback just after the Election Commission announced the poll dates for 5 states including Manipur. Congress Vice President and MLA from Manipur, Chaltanlian Amo joined the ruling BJP on January 9, 2022 and joined the BJP in a small ceremony at his office in Imphal. In the 2017 elections, the Congress had won 28 out of 60 seats.
