Highlights of the Commonwealth Games 2022 Opening CeremonyThe 2022 Commonwealth Games were officially declared open after a grand opening ceremony at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on Thursday. Olympic medalist PV Sindhu and men’s hockey team captain Manpreet Singh lead the Indian contingent. Neeraj Chopra was the designated flag bearer for India at the opening ceremony, but he suffered an injury during the World Athletics Championships, where he won the silver medal. He was ruled out of the Commonwealth Games 2022 due to injury. Earlier, drummer-percussionist Abraham Paddy Teteh started things off at Alexander Stadium, and then, led by Indian classical singer and composer Ranjana Ghatak, the segment aimed to showcase the diversity of the city. The Games, which have been the biggest and most expensive sporting event in the UK since the 2012 London Olympics, have had to grapple with the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prince Charles is attending the opening ceremony as the chief guest. The Queen’s baton arrives at the Games Village in Birmingham on Wednesday, 27 July. The entire opening ceremony, which is expected to last around two and a half hours, is designed by British screenwriter Steven Knight, who produced the famous crime drama Peaky Blinders. , Speaking of the Commonwealth Games, athletes from more than 72 countries and territories have entered the multi-discipline program. Meanwhile, India had won 66 medals in the previous edition of Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Australia.
