Commonwealth Games 2022: Indian men’s hockey team leaves for Birmingham

The Manpreet Singh-led side, placed in Pool B along with England, Canada, Wales and Ghana, will begin their campaign against Ghana on July 31.

India The men’s hockey team left for England on Saturday morning for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham with the hope of winning their first gold medal at the quadrennial showpiece. This mega event will be organized from 28 July to 8 August.

The Manpreet Singh-led side, placed in Pool B along with England, Canada, Wales and Ghana, will begin their campaign against Ghana on July 31. Talking about the enthusiasm in the team, Manpreet Singh said that he will aim for a podium finish in the games.

“We are very excited about this event as we have been training for this competition for some time now, and we look forward to putting our best foot forward against some of the best teams in the world. After working on our strengths and weaknesses over the past few months, we will do whatever it takes to win a medal here.”

Manpreet also believes that India’s third-place finish in the FIH Men’s Pro League season 2021/2022, where they faced stiff competition, will help them in Birmingham.

Talking about the mood of the dressing room, Manpreet said, “Everyone is excited and eager to give their 100 per cent. Right now our focus is to get to Birmingham and get used to the weather and playing conditions there. We are also preparing for our first match as a strong start against Ghana will be the key to opening our campaign.”
