Commonwealth Games 2022: Para power lifter Sudhir wins gold; makes history

As the Commonwealth Games complete its 7th day, India continues to bag some of its first and historic medals at the championships. Indian player Sudhir on Thursday added another medal to India’s first list by winning the gold medal in men’s para heavy weight lifting at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 with a best weight of 212kg.

After a few failed attempts by Indian power lifters to clinch a medal earlier in the day, para power lifter Sudhir won the gold medal beating Ikechukwu Obichuku of Nigeria, who scored 133.6, by 0.9 points. His final score read a game record 134.5 points for gold.

The same day Murali Shankar entered Number of winners of Commonwealth Games 2022 Winning silver medal in long jump. He covered a distance of 8.08 meters in his fifth attempt of the long jump. He won India’s second medal in athletics at the Commonwealth Games.

Sudhir’s first successful lift of 208 kg was a piece of cake to score 132.0 for the lifter. He later showed some improvement in the second round by lifting 212 kg to score 134.5 points. However, he could not lift 217 kg in the last attempt, but managed to win the gold medal with 134.5 points.

The day did not start well for the Indian para-powerlifters as none of them were able to win medals in the competition. Manpreet Kaur started well by lifting 87 kg in the first round. He scored 88.6 points in that round. Later, she lifted 88kg in her second attempt to score 89.6. However, she failed to lift 90 kg in her last attempt and finished fourth.

Another powerlifter Shakina Khatoon could not make it to the winner’s list as she could not lift 90 kg in her first attempt. However, she successfully lifted 90kg in her second attempt to score 89.6 points. She failed to lift 90 kg in her last attempt.

Earlier in the day, Indian para-powerlifters failed to win medals after their failed attempts. Manpreet Kaur started with a successful lift of 87kg scoring 88.6 in her first attempt. In the second attempt, she lifted 88 kg securing 89.6 points. She failed to lift 90 kg in her last attempt.

The pair finished just outside the podium places with totals of 89.6kg and 87.5kg. India’s Manpreet Kaur and Sakina Khatoon finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Apart from the women’s section, Paramjeet Kumar also could not perform well in the championship. He could not lift 165 kg in his first attempt. He again failed to lift 165 kg. He could not make any difference in the last attempt and ended up at the bottom of the table.
