Commonwealth Games: Jeremy Lalrinnunga wins second gold for India, sets Games record

Jeremy Lalrinnunga on Sunday won his second gold medal in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. Jeremy performed brilliantly during the men’s 67kg weightlifting event.

The 19-year-old overtook the opponents by lifting a total of 300 kg and also recorded a game record.

Wapva Ioane won the silver medal in snatch with 127 kg and 166 kg in clean and jerk by lifting 293 kg. This meant that Jeremy was an unstoppable winner with a difference of 7kg in first and second place. On the other hand, Edidiong Umofia finished with a bronze medal in the snatch with a lift of 290kg and a lift of 130kg in the clean and jerk.

Jeremy’s best lift recorded 140 kg in his second attempt at the snatch. He lifted 136 kg in his first attempt. However, she failed to lift 143 kg in her third attempt.

When it comes to clean and jerk, Jeremy lifted 154kg in the first attempt and 160kg in the second attempt, but failed to lift 165kg in the third attempt.

Hailing from Aizawl, Mizoram, Jeremy has represented India at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires and the Commonwealth Championships in 2021. He won gold medals in both the events.

Jeremy’s gold added to India’s 5th medal tally in Birmingham and India’s 130th medal in weightlifting.

Earlier, Bindiyarani Devi won silver medal in 55kg women’s category, Mirabai Chanu won gold medal in women’s 49kg category, Gururaja Pujari won bronze medal in 61kg men’s category and Sanket Sargar won silver medal in 55kg men’s category. Won medal Third for the country.
