Commonwealth Games: Wrestler Naveen won gold medal, India got 34th medal

India’s wrestler Naveen Malik won the gold medal for India in the Commonwealth Games 2022 by registering a victory over Pakistan’s Muhammad Sharif Tahir.

19-year-old Naveen defeated his Pakistani rival 9-0 in the 74kg category of wrestling on Saturday.

His dominant win added a sixth medal in wrestling and 34th medal in India’s medal tally. India has so far secured 12 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 11 bronze medals in the 2022 edition of the multinational event.

Earlier in the day, Ravi Kumar Dahiya and Vinesh Phogat also won gold medals in wrestling.

Olympic silver-medallist Dahiya defeated Nigeria’s Abikevenimo Welson 10-0 in the 57kg weight category. Dahiya won by technical superiority.

On the other hand, 27-year-old Phogat created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win gold at both the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. She also became the first Indian woman to win three consecutive gold medals at the Commonwealth Games.
