Concerned over Captain’s ‘poaching’, CM Channi ups his PR game to keep Congress swarm together

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi Worried that his ‘hurt’ predecessor will oust some of his party’s MLAs, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi is on an ‘outreach exercise’ to ensure that he can unite the Congress swarm. Keep up with, especially people who are seen as soft exes to ex. CM Capt Amarinder Singh.

Channi began with pacifying Balbir Singh Sidhu, a three-time MLA from Mohali with whom he has had strained relations for the past two decades. Balbir Sidhu was the health minister in the Amarinder cabinet but was dropped after a change in guard. Channi met Sidhu for about three hours, after which it seemed that Sidhu had reduced his attack on the new cabinet.

Channi did not stop at this meeting. Sources said the new chief minister is now taking advantage of a more personalized programme, his son’s wedding, which is set to soon expand his reach to those who will be troubled. Informed sources said that Channi has been meeting some MLAs and ministers personally and inviting them for marriage.

“Opportunities like these provide an opportunity to have some sort of informal heart-to-heart talk. This is what he feels and makes sure he meets especially those who may be vulnerable,” said one leader. commented.

The party has been afraid of attempts of ‘poaching’ by Amarinder Singh after he announced that he was breaking away from the Congress but not joining the BJP. What has raised alarm bells in the Channi government is that Singh is likely to form his own party and there are indications that he will target some of his old allies in the Congress who have been left out.

“He (captain) will definitely target people in the party itself before looking around. There are many people in the party who though have followed the line of the high command, but feel uncomfortable with the events before Amarinder’s exit,” remarked a party leader.

This is why, sources say, Channi was trying to placate the class, which could be an ‘easy target’ for Singh for his regional front, once he decides to swim it. Trying to keep their flock together will also keep the pressure on them from people in the PCC chief Navjot Singh Sidhu camp. “Give him a double advantage,” quipped one leader.
