A Congress candidate contesting the just-concluded KMC election on Wednesday moved the Calcutta High Court, seeking permission to file a plea for alleged assault on him and providing police security after the polling was over. On December 19, Rabi Saha, Congress candidate from Ward No 16 for Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections, claimed that supporters of the ruling Trinamool Congress assaulted him and made a video of the incident, which went viral on social media.

Justice Rajasekhar Mantha, before whom his counsel mentioned the matter, allowed him to file a petition in this regard. Saha’s counsel said that after filing the petition, the matter may be taken up for hearing on Thursday.

His lawyer claimed that the police did not take necessary action after the episode, adding that he would seek a court’s direction to the police to take action against the perpetrators and provide security to Saha. The counting of votes for the elections was held on Tuesday, with the ruling TMC gaining control of the 144-member KMC, capturing 134 seats to post a hat-trick of victory.
