Congress eyeing 5-year term limit, cool-off period amid reforms India News – Times of India

Udaipur: Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi on Friday presented the crisis to the party as serious and demanded a new strategy for organizational restructuring and revival, arguing that “extraordinary situations can only be dealt with by extraordinary actions”.
The urgency in the Congress ranks at the start of the Chintan Shivir here was reiterated by Mallikarjun Kharge, who said the party would focus on consolidating itself, with the alliance no longer a priority.
As part of its change, the Congress is considering reserving half of all party posts for people below the age of 50. It is also planning a ‘one family, one ticket’ formula for the elections, in which a second ticket candidate will be given exemption if he has done “exemplary work” for five years. This exemption will ensure that Priyanka Gandhi will be eligible to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Congress wants to fix a maximum term of five years for organizational positions, with a mandatory cooling-off period of three years, thereby banning back-to-back tenures for its members.
At the Chintan Shivir here on Friday, senior leader Mallikarjun Kharge said, “First we want to fix our house. We want to make Congress people more active and more powerful, and then we will go to others. If not you Let’s do is there any investment, which partner will come and who will put money on you? So after rectifying our shortcomings, we will discuss the issue of alliance and work out a comprehensive theory.”
The corrective measures being considered include setting up of an “Internal Insights Wing”, a year-round arrangement for feedback on issues and popular pulse through technology-based surveys. AICC general secretary Ajay Maken said the party was also looking at setting up an “internal assessment wing” that would assess party functionaries that would form the basis for rewards or punishment.
Spokesperson Ragini Nayak said that the generational change of the organization would include caste and gender balance with adequate representation to SCs, STs, OBCs, minorities and women.
