Congress leader Imran Masood’s praise for Samajwadi Party fuels speculation of a switch

With senior leaders like Jitin Prasada joining the Bharatiya Janata Party recently, the Congress party’s worries are not over yet. Now former MLA and Congress leader Imran Masood from the western part of the state has praised the Samajwadi Party before the 2022 UP assembly elections. Once again there are speculations that Masood may soon join the Samajwadi Party, a few days ago Imran Masood also met SP chief Akhilesh Yadav at a wedding ceremony.

Talking exclusively to News18, Imran Masood said, “I am not joining Samajwadi Party, such news is made by all the media. I am sitting in Saharanpur and false warnings are being given that I am going to Lucknow. I have to go to Lucknow tomorrow, that is to meet Priyanka ji.

Asked about his admiration for the Samajwadi Party, Masood said, “What I have said is correct in principle, we cannot ignore the existence of Samajwadi Party, it is a big political party which has a large Vote share. You can easily see this in the election statistics. In such a situation, SP can definitely be a strong contender in defeating BJP by taking others along. SP should forge alliance with Congress so that all together can fight against BJP.

On the question of senior leaders leaving the Congress, Masood said, “Congress is a political party and leaders come and go, it does not affect the party.” Even if I am in Congress or out of Congress, it will not affect the party. If democracy is to be saved from BJP then SP and Congress should come together.

Imran Masood became an independent MLA from Muzaffarabad Assembly in 2007. He defeated Jagdish Singh Rana of SP. He has also won the election of Saharanpur Municipality President. In 2012, he contested the assembly elections from Nakur, but lost. In 2014, he contested from Saharanpur on a Congress ticket. In this, he stood second by getting about 4.10 lakh votes. After this he contested from Nakur assembly in 2017 assembly election, but lost to BJP candidate Dharam Singh Saini by about 1300 votes. Along with the assembly, Imran Masood has also tried his luck in the Lok Sabha elections but could not win.
