Sources say that Congress President Sonia Gandhi is trying to persuade Hindu Khatri Ambika Soni to take over the top post in Punjab.

in an interesting play Punjab The Congress continued till midnight on Saturday, with the party still struggling to zero in on a successor to the disgruntled outgoing Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.

The suspense seems to be dragging on as the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) is yet to get the final nod from Congress President Sonia Gandhi on the successor. Earlier it was decided that the name chosen would be shared in the CLP meeting to be held at 11 am on Sunday. Sources say that the names of the MLAs will be announced a few minutes before the meeting with the Governor at 4 pm.

Several rounds of discussions have been held at a private hotel since late Saturday night by AICC-appointed supervisors Ajay Maken and Harish Choudhary besides Punjab affairs in-charge Harish Rawat. Sources said that various groups of MLAs, led by Sukhjinder Randhawa and Sunil Jakhar, are holding meetings with observers. Based on his feedback, observers are holding discussions with party leader Rahul Gandhi.

The central leadership was reportedly keen to announce senior party leader Ambika Soni as the chief minister on Saturday, but the announcement was delayed as pressure groups started lobbying Sunil Jakhar and Sukhjinder Randhawa. A Hindu Khatri Soni also expressed reluctance to accept the offer, with sources saying Sonia Gandhi was still trying to persuade him to take up the role.

At present, the suspense continues on Sunday.
