Congress vows to fulfill 5 pre-poll guarantees in Karnataka government’s first meeting

Bengaluru, May 13 (PTI) Senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Saturday said the incoming government in Karnataka will not only put its seal of approval on the five pre-poll guarantees announced by the party in the first cabinet meeting but will also pass an order. This effect immediately.

He also said that the mandate given by the people is to provide a pro-people administration and not for “pleasure”.

Addressing a press conference here, the former chief minister said, “The five guarantees we have given will be approved in the first cabinet meeting and after that we will pass an order.”

Congress has promised to implement ‘guarantees’ – 200 units of free electricity (Griha Jyoti) to all households, 2,000 monthly assistance to the female head of each household (Griha Lakshmi), 10 kg rice free to each member of the BPL household (Anna Bhagya), 3,000 per month for graduate youth and 1,500 for diploma holders (both in the 18-25 age group) for two years (Yuvanidhi), and free travel for women in public transport buses (Shakti).

He also took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who allegedly mocked these guarantees. Siddaramaiah said, “Modi said these promises will not be fulfilled as it will burden the state with debt. Modi himself burdened the country with debt. It is the BJP that has pushed the state towards bankruptcy.”

The Congress wrested power from the BJP with a comfortable victory in the assembly elections. According to the Election Commission’s website, at 9.30 pm, the party emerged on top in 135 seats and was leading in one seat.
