Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation is all set to revamp the bus shelters in the city, which have fallen into disrepair over the years.

According to the assessment of the civic body, the condition of about 100 bus shelters in different areas of the city is poor, threatening the public. The corporation plans to revamp them under public-private partnership model with better facilities.

One of the issues corporations face when attempting to renovate bus shelters is regarding the ownership of the structures. Some of these were constructed by NGOs, private agencies and resident associations, and have no regular maintenance. Corporation officials had recently convened a meeting with officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) and Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) to take their opinion on the bus shelter renovation works along the roads under their control.

“We are thinking of a common project for restoration of all bus shelters which are in dilapidated condition. There have been cases of people getting injured due to the collapse of some parts of these structures. However, some of these are under construction. was done by NGOs or other agencies, corporation is liquidated. Obtaining notices from court or human rights commission whenever such incidents happen. Structures created by clubs or agencies for the purpose of advertising their names and often does not have the required stability which is why the corporation decided to reform all of them,” said an official of the corporation.

According to the official, the corporation has received several proposals for sponsoring bus shelters. The civic body will ensure that the renovated bus shelters are of uniform design and required consistency.

Along with the bus timings, LED walls, drinking water dispensers and public toilet facilities will also be part of the design in places with ample space. Bus shelters will be refurbished along the stretches where widening or maintenance works are not being considered immediately.
