Voting for the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency and Ballygunge assembly seat was held on April 12.

Voting for the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency and Ballygunge assembly seat was held on April 12.

The counting of votes for the Asansol Lok Sabha seat and Ballygunge assembly constituency in West Bengal began at 8 am on Saturday, April 16, 2022, an election official said.

Asansol Lok Sabha constituency and Ballygunge assembly seat recorded 66.42 per cent and 41.23 per cent polling, respectively, in the elections held on April 12.

A total of 15 lakh voters were eligible to exercise their franchise in Asansol in West Bardhaman district, while 2.5 lakh could vote in Ballygunge in South Kolkata.

The bypoll was necessitated as Babul Supriyo had resigned as the MP from Asansol after switching from the BJP to the TMC, while Minister of State Subrata Mukherjee, who represented Ballygunge last year, passed away.

TMC has fielded veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha in Asansol, which has a sizeable Hindi-speaking population. BJP has fielded MLA Agnimitra Paul from Asansol South.

The ruling Trinamool Congress has fielded Supriyo from Ballygunge, where he is pitted against BJP’s Kiya Ghosh and CPI(M)’s Saira Shah Haleem. Congress is also in the fray in both the seats.
