Covid-19: India reports 423 fresh infections, active cases down at 6,168

New Delhi: India registered 423 fresh COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, according to an update by the union health ministry on Thursday. The nation has seen a decline in active cases, currently at 6,168. Since the onset of the pandemic three years ago, over 44.9 million Indians have been infected, with death toll at 531,854.

Health experts have said that most hospital admissions are currently among the elderly and individuals with underlying health conditions. They stress the importance of receiving booster shots.

Recent reports indicate that the COVID-19 variant XBB.1.16 was responsible for a recent surge in cases. However, numbers are now decreasing nationwide. Scientists believe that a blend of vaccination and natural infection has spurred hybrid immunity, reducing the severity of the virus.

Approximately 444 million individuals have recuperated, with 953 recoveries recorded in the last day. India boasts a recovery rate of 98.80%. The union health ministry has encouraged states to adopt a risk-assessment approach to infection control, underlining the necessity of effective management at the micro level, like district and sub-districts.

India’s comprehensive strategy comprises testing, tracking, treating, and vaccinating. An impressive 220.66 crore vaccinations have been administered, with 1,596 doses given in the last day. Total tests have surpassed 92.93 crore, with 1,23,395 conducted in the last 24 hours. The government has urged citizens to mask up in crowded places and ensure their vaccinations are up to date.
