COVID-19: Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya cases jump to 103

“103 people, including 92 students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya at Seegodu near Balehonnur, have tested positive for COVID-19 since December 2,” Chikkamagaluru Deputy Commissioner KN Ramesh said on December 6.

At a media conference in Chikkamagaluru, the DC said that 30 samples were collected on December 2 at the residential school. Eight of them were tested positive. On December 3, the Department of Health and Family Welfare collected 418 samples at the school, and 95 of them tested positive. A total of 103 persons, including 92 students, nine teachers and two members of the teachers’ family, had tested positive for the infection.

Stating that there was no need to worry, the DC said that the administration had deployed medical staff in the school. The staff would be there round the clock and they had sufficient stock of medicines.

A team of doctors led by the District Health Officer visited the school and took necessary steps to contain the spread of the infection. “All infected persons have been isolated,” he said.

The DC said that all the 103 samples that tested positive would be sent to NIMHANS in Bengaluru for genome sequencing. “Only after sequencing the genome of the samples, we will know about the type of virus that caused the infection. As of now, there is nothing to worry about,” he said.

Two ambulances have been deployed in the school and measures have been taken to provide healthy food for the children.

“We are getting calls from parents of children enrolled in the school. They don’t need to worry. We are taking care of the children. They have been put in isolation on the campus and the teachers have been quarantined in their quarters,” the DC said.
