COVID-19: This is what you should do if you are facing memory issues after COVID recovery

If you have just recovered from COVID, it is likely that you are experiencing problems with your memory, concentration and ability to fathom while talking to others. Unfortunately, cognitive deficit is a common post-COVID symptom affecting a lot of people. With case studies revealing the persistence of ‘long COVID’ symptoms in the chronic phase and neurological problems in severely affected patients, there is increasing concern about the possible cognitive consequences of COVID-19. However, little is known about the type and prevalence of cognitive difficulties following infection or the full range of disease severity. Dr. Praveen Gupta, Principal Director and Head, Department of Neurology at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, told HTLive that vascular damage can occur as a result of COVID due to low oxygen electrical dysfunction and neurotransmitter imbalance. Dr Gupta says that any of the symptoms mentioned above should be followed up with a visit to a neurologist. He also advised people to get vaccinated. Some of Dr Gupta’s suggestions are as follows:

eating well and paying attention to sleep

Eat regularly and pay attention to your sleeping patterns. Immunotherapy with steroids and IVIG (intravenous immunoglobulin) may help if there is substantial memory loss and brain MRI shows few abnormalities.

Check VitB12

Thyroid and vitamin B12 levels should be checked and brought to normalcy. Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and milk, as antioxidants and nutrients help maintain brain function.

Manage stress to improve brain function

COVID has a significant effect on brain transmitters, causing anxiety and insomnia, as well as disruption of memory transmitters in the brain.

‘It can lead to amnesia, cognitive impairment and loss of focus. So don’t think too much about this disease because it destroys the brain transmitter. Prioritize important tasks, reduce anxiety, and take supplements to help with weakness to reduce stress-related brain dysfunction,’ says Dr Gupta.

Doctors say that participating in recreational activities such as sports and recreational hobbies helps to rejuvenate the brain and provide protection from stress-induced dysfunction. So, take care of your health by following the above-mentioned tips.
