Covid-19 updates: Daily cases below 2k mark, active tally at 27,374

According to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Tuesday, India recorded 1,957 new coronavirus infections, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases to 4,46,16,394, while the active cases stood at 27,374.

The death toll rose to 5,28,822 with eight deaths, including three deaths reconciled by Kerala, data updated at 8 am.

Active cases comprise 0.06 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has risen to 98.75 per cent, the ministry said.

India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed 20 lakhs on August 7, 2020, 30 lakhs on 23rd August, 40 lakhs on 5th September and 50 lakhs on 16th September. It had crossed 60 lakh on 28 September, 70 lakh on 11 October. 80 lakh on 29 October, 90 lakh on 20 November and crossed the one crore mark on 19 December.

The country crossed 2 crores on 4th May last year, 3 crores on 23rd June and 4 crores on 25th January this year.

States have been asked to continue surveillance of incoming international travelers, carry out continuous genome sequencing and phased immunization.

Meanwhile, health experts have found that patients who have recovered from mild to moderate cases of COVID-19 and are now suffering from chronic COVID-19 have also seen psychological distress as a symptom.

“Acute covid patients have some psychological and psychotic symptoms, but what is more relevant now is the long covid or post covid psychological and psychiatric symptoms. This may be due to the direct effects of the virus on the brain, it also affects the brain psyche and mind, social impact and economic impact as a whole,” news agency ANI quoted Dr. Nimesh Desai, former director of IHBAS, as saying.
