Delhi recorded 1,537 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday with a positivity rate of 26.54 per cent, while new cases crossed the 200-day mark in Mumbai after a gap of two days, officials said.

With the new cases, Delhi’s Covid tally has gone up to 20,25,781. According to the bulletin issued by the health department, five fresh deaths have taken the death toll due to the viral disease to 26,572. The bulletin states that in two of the recent deaths, the primary cause of death was Covid.

On Monday, Delhi recorded 1,017 new Covid cases with a positivity rate of 32.25 per cent, the highest in more than 15 months. The national capital had recorded a Covid positivity rate of 30.6 per cent on January 14 last year. According to the latest bulletin, fresh cases were reported in 5,791 tests done to detect the infection on the previous day.

The number of Covid cases had dropped to zero on January 16 for the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic. However, the city has seen a spurt in cases in the last fortnight. Of the 7,964 beds in Delhi’s dedicated Covid hospitals, 360 are occupied, while 3,827 patients are in home isolation, said the health department’s bulletin. Currently the number of active cases is 5,714.

Mumbai reported 220 new Covid cases on Tuesday, crossing the 200-mark after a gap of two days, taking the total to 11,60,902, while no new deaths linked to the infection were recorded, the local civic body said. .

The bulletin of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that the death toll remained unchanged at 19,754. The financial capital has reported over 200 new infections after a gap of two days. On Monday, the city recorded 131 cases, while the daily tally was 181 on Sunday. According to the bulletin, the number of recovered patients rose to 11,39,471 after 242 patients recovered from the respiratory disease in the last 24 hours, taking the number of active cases in the metropolis to 1,677.
