Union Power Minister RK Singh said on Thursday, “The cracks in Joshimath’s houses are coming out deliberately. This problem came to the fore in the 70s itself. That is, since 1975. The NTPC project started in 2009, while the problem It started decades ago. So the problem is not because of this project.” RK Singh said these things in a special interview on the spots of World Economic Photography in Davos, Switzerland.
Union Power Minister’s statement is the biggest support for NTPC so far. NTPC had last week said that its tunnel construction and other works cannot blame the population of about 20,000 people for cracks in the houses of Joshimath.
Under intense pressure from the locals over Joshimath, the BJP government in Uttarakhand has said that it will investigate whether NTPC was responsible for the Joshimath landslide. In fact, the local people allege that the subsidence in the area has deepened due to the 12 km Chhota Maiagne for the 520 Chitra Tapovan Vishnugarh Hydroelectric Project. Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti (JBSS) and a pressure group of local people have demanded its cancellation.
Citing facts, the Union Minister said that the village near the NTPC project site has not been affected. Rather such diseases have been there for many decades in this area. However, Joshimath’s top district official Himanshu Khurana said work on the NTPC plant has now stopped and the Center and states have taken note of the danger of damage to the plant.
Several government agencies and institutes such as the Geographical Survey of India (GIS), National Geophysical Research Institute, National Institute of Hydrology and Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology are studying the issue, Khurana told news agency PTI.
